What we fund

We currently administer over 40 grants, including awards for two and three-year projects, research fellowships, postgraduate studentships, equipment and travel.

Small Project Grants (less than £15,000)

Grants to help researchers meet urgent requirements or conduct pilot studies.  Applications can be submitted at any time and will be considered at quarterly research committee meetings. Download our small project grant application form.

Postgraduate Studentships

We award PhD studentships by annual competitive round.  A new round of applications will be invited from prospective supervisors in priority areas of research in August 2012. More details will be available nearer the time. 

Vacation scholarships

The scholarships are intended to provide promising undergraduates with hands-on research experience during the summer vacation. Applications should be submitted by potential supervisors with hearing research teams at UK universities.  The scheme is currently closed - a new round of applications will start in 2013.

Travel Grants

Awards up to £750 are available to young scientists (PhD students and post doctoral fellows) for meetings and collaborative visits.  Applications can be submitted at any time and will be considered at quarterly research committee meetings. Download a travel grant application form.

Conference Travel Schemes

We run special schemes to enable researchers to attend the ARO Midwinter meeting, the International Hearing Aid Research Conference and the Conference on Implantable Auditory Prostheses.  These are advertised via EarMail and on this website at the appropriate time.

Meeting Sponsorship

Sponsorship awards to promote discussion in areas where it is felt important to stimulate research, review future directions or improve communication between researchers. Download a meeting application form.

Pauline Ashley Prize

The Pauline Ashley Prize is awarded annually, to a scientist near the beginning of his or her career working in deafness research or a related field to fund a trip abroad for 3 to 6 months.  The scheme is currently closed - a new round of applications will start in 2013.

Fulbright-Deafness Research UK Fellowships

In collaboration with the Fulbright Commission, up to three grants are offered to UK academics or professionals to pursue laboratory based research into prevention, diagnosis or treatment of all forms of hearing impairment, for a period of three to twelve months. Candidates choose and make arrangements with US host institutions directly and independently.  This scheme will open on 1 August 2012 with a closing date of 15 November 2012.  Please visit the Fulbright Commission website for more information and for applications.

Equipment Grants

Applications are assessed on the basis of the research case and can be submitted at any time.  These grants will generally only be funded from restricted funds raised specifically for the equipment. Download an equipment grant application form.
