Recent awards
We have recently approved two new PhD studentships to:
- Dr Jonathan Gale and Dr Sally Dawson, UCL Ear Institute for a project on ‘Understanding the role of stress granules in the inner ear’, £75,000
- Dr Jennifer Bizley, UCL Ear Institute for a project on ‘A visionary approach to enhancing listening in challenging conditions’ , £62,541
At our last meeting at the end of January 2013 two awards were approved:
- A small project grant to Dr Velia Cardin, DCAL UCL on ‘The modulatory effect of dopamine on speech perception – a potential intervention therapy for successful cochlear implantation’, £ £14,675
- A small project grant to Professor John Birchall, University of Nottingham on ‘Establishing the safety of PLGA pellets laden with antibiotics in the middle ear as a potential treatment for glue ear’, £14,952
At our meeting at the end of October 2012 three awards were approved:
- A small project grant to Dr Michael Evans, Keele University and Dr Helen Kennedy, University of Bristol on ‘Properties of the hair cell acetylcholine receptor during development’, £8,250
- A small project grant to Dr David Furness, Keele University on ‘Cochlear hair bundle structure in mice with mutations in putative mechanotransducer channel proteins, Tmc1 and Tmc, £14,993.
- A small project grant to Dr Stuart Johnson, University of Sheffield on ‘Role of connexin 26 in the development of the mammalian cochlea’, £7,263.

Funds were provided to enable a number of researchers to attend various conferences. The meetings included the ARO mid-winter meeting 2012 held in California and the International Hearing Aid Research Conference 2012 also held in Lake Tahoe, California.
Four other grants were awarded to researchers to attend the Society for Neuroscience 2012 meeting in New Orleans,the 16th International Symposium on Hearing and the American Society of Human Genetics 2012 conferences.
