Our decision making process

Deafness Research UK only undertakes projects of the highest standard and which are deemed to have significant, potential benefit for people suffering from deafness and related conditions.

All applications are assessed using a rigorous peer review process in line with the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) guidelines and best practice.

The charity has a panel of eight scientific and medical experts who advise on research strategy and have responsibility for the review and monitoring of applications and grants.

Research advisers, assisted by the external reviewers, assess not only the scientific merit of an application but also its chances of yielding clear, applicable results, and its urgency and appropriateness at a time of great scarcity of funds, even for the highest quality research.  Reviewed applications are considered on a quarterly basis by our Research Sub-committee and approved by our Trustees.
