Trustees and chief executive

Deafness Research UK is governed by a Board of Trustees. Day-to-day control is exercised by the Chief Executive.

The charity's governing document stipulates that it should have between 6 and 30 trustees. Trustees are appointed by the Board and serve for three years. After this time they may put themselves forward for re-election.

Officers are appointed by the Board and elected annually.

The Board meets every quarter. At these meetings, the Board agrees the broad strategy and activities of the charity. It considers grant making, information, communications and fundraising activities. It also agrees strategy on investment and reserves policy, and on risk management.

The Board regularly undertakes a skills audit to ensure that it has the necessary range of experience and expertise.

Currently the Board provides the charity with expertise in hearing research, the deaf community and other deafness charities. The Board also provides us with personal experience and understanding of deafness. We draw strength from the Board's knowledge of the media and their business, legal and financial experience and expertise.

New trustees are identified through appropriate networks such as the scientific and medical communities.

Deafness Research UK's Trustees are also the Directors of the charitable company.
