Vacation scholarships for 2008

13 June 2008

Competition for this year's vacation scholarships was extremely tough and Deafness Research UK is very pleased to announce that this year’s awards will go to four highly promising young students.

Kristina Gedgaudiate – a second year undergraduate who will work with Professor Stuart Rosen and Dr Andrew Faulkner at University College London this summer on a project that aims to improve the ability of cochlear implant users to understand speech.

Charlotte Caunt – a fourth year undergraduate who will study the ability to process sound pitch, a feature that is important for listening in noisy environments. Charlotte will spend eight weeks working at the MRC Institute of Hearing Research in Nottingham with Dr Katrin Krumbholz.

Beth Coates – a second year undergraduate who will investigate a gene that is involved in human hereditary hearing loss in a two month project with Professor Guy Richardson at the University of Sussex.

Joanne Eaves – a second year undergraduate who will spend the summer working with Professor Quentin Summerfield at the University of York on a project that seeks to measure and understand the spatial listening skills of profoundly deaf children who use cochlear implants.

Congratulations to all the winners!

We will update you on their progress once the projects have been completed in the autumn.
