Vacation Scholarships

Deafness Research UK is committed to attracting more young scientists into hearing research. Our Vacation Scholarships are intended to provide promising undergraduates with "hands-on" experience of hearing research during their summer vacation in the hope of encouraging them to consider a career in the field.

Deafness Research UK is pleased to announce the award of four Vacation Scholarships for 2010 with one award in the field of tinnitus research

Every year, Deafness Research UK awards a number of scholarships to students during their first degree to enable them to undertake a research project in a hearing research laboratory.  The awards cover the students’ stipend for up to 8 weeks research over the summer holidays.  This year we have awarded four scholarships covering a range of topics in hearing research in four different research centres.

Leah Glover is working in the laboratory of Professor Quentin Summerfield in the Psychology Department, University of York.  Her project is entitled ‘Studies of bilateral and bimodal cochlear implantation’.

Annie Woolley is working with Dr Karolina Kluk-de Kort in the School of Psychological Sciences, Manchester University on a project entitled ‘Depravation-induced auditory plasticity; physiological and perceptual consequences of the presence of cochlear dead regions’.

Amelia Davies is working in the laboratory of Dr Jennifer Bizley in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at Oxford University.  She is working on a project entitled ‘Examining the role of auditory cortex in vowel identification via reversible inactivation’.

David Green is working with Dr Mark Wallace at the National Biomedical Unit for Hearing Research, Nottingham.  His project is on the ‘Timecourse of changes in the guinea pig brain following noise-induced hearing loss’ and is in the field of tinnitus research.  This scholarship gives David a valuable opportunity to learn new skills which he will be using when he starts a PhD supervised by Dr Wallace in October this year.

These scholarships offer a wonderful opportunity for young students to gain experience of the research laboratory and encourage them to consider further research in the field of hearing loss, deafness and tinnitus.  We wish them every success in their projects.

The call for the next round of vacation scholarships will take place during Spring 2011.

This year we are able to offer up to four scholarships. Applications are being invited from potential supervisors within hearing research teams at UK universities or research centres.
