Nearly nine million people in the UK - one in seven of the population - have a hearing impairment. Because deafness can't be seen, it attracts little public sympathy and few understand the everyday challenge it presents.
Yet its effects can be devastating, robbing people of their confidence and affecting their relationships with family and friends.
Deafness Research UK is the UK's only national charity dedicated to supporting medical research into deafness and other hearing problems.
