Pauline Ashley

Pauline Ashley was a remarkable person and an inspiration to all who knew her. Without her, Deafness Research UK, which has done so much to find better treatments and cures for deafness simply would not exist.

It was typical of Pauline that in the mid 1980s, when she realised how little was being done to find medical answers for deaf people, she set out, with quiet determination, to reverse this neglect. The scale of the task would have deterred most people but Pauline successfully brought together scientists and clinicians to identify the most promising lines of research and then worked tirelessly to raise awareness and much needed funding.

Millions of people owe her a great debt of gratitude and she will be much missed.

Pauline is survived by her husband, our President, Lord (Jack) Ashley and three daughters. Her family has asked that those who wish to remember Pauline do so by donating to the charity she founded, perpetuating her influence on hearing research. With your help we hope to establish the Pauline Ashley Memorial Fund, which will help ensure that medical research projects lead to advances which will have a lasting impact on the quality of life of hearing impaired people.

We do hope that you will be able to make a contribution in recognition both of our founder’s dedication to improving the lives of hearing impaired people, and the ongoing need to find better ways of diagnosing, treating and curing hearing disorders.
