Improving facilities for people with cochlear implants

Deafness Research UK is aiming to provide facilities to equip sound booths at the new 'South of England Cochlear Implant Centre', which is to be built in Southampton.

These sound booths will provide cochlear implant users with the support and care they need to communicate in a hearing world.

The programme for cochlear implant patients is life-long, as regular visits to audiologists for assessment are required. Sound booths provide the ideal soundproofed environment and specialist equipment needed for this assessment. However, the pressure on sound booths at the existing Centre is such that many assessments are being undertaken in rooms without soundproofing, undermining accuracy and effectiveness.

The improved facilities will not only allow the rising number of cochlear implant patients to be accommodated at the Centre, but will also allow Professor Mark Lutman and Professor Phil Nelson, to undertake research aimed at improving the performance of cochlear implants in the future.
