Helping your child through glue ear
Three quarters of a million children in the UK will suffer from temporary hearing loss as a result of glue ear this winter.
Deafness Research UK, the UK's medical charity for deaf and hard of hearing people, is launching an offensive to help parents tackle glue ear through the winter months, when symptoms are often at their worst.
Although there is no cure for glue ear, and no real prevention, parents can minimise its effects. Working with the UK's leading glue ear researchers and with input from parents, Deafness Research UK has created
Top Tips for Helping your Child Through Glue Ear, a leaflet offering guidance to parents to ensure children hear and understand what is being said.

Glue ear is hard to prevent because it is triggered by infections passed on through contact with friends and family. However, parents can reduce the impact of temporary hearing problems caused by glue ear, which can be frustrating for children and even affect their development.
- Four out of five children get glue ear in early childhood.
- Middle ear disease, including infections, accounts for about one third of visits to the GP in the first 18 months of life.
- Glue ear is the most common reason why children undergo surgery involving general anaesthetic.
