First Deafness Research UK Research Manager

20 June 2005

Deafness Research UK, the UK's medical charity for deaf and hard of hearing people, has appointed Dr Paula Clements to the new position of Research Development Manager.

Dr Clements has a strong research background, joining Deafness Research UK from the MRC Genome Damage and Stability Centre, where she held the position of Senior Research Fellow.

Prior to this she was a visiting research fellow at the Department of Radiation Genetics, Kyoto University, Japan, where she worked with one of the pioneers of the DT40 cell system to learn how to generate gene knockout mutant cell lines for use back in the UK.

Deafness Research UK Chief Executive, Vivienne Michael, says, "Deafness Research UK has an impressive track record of initiating ground-breaking research projects. We have played a key role in introducing screening for deafness in newborn babies, identifying many of the genes for deafness and improving digital hearing aids and cochlear implants.

"Now, the possibilities for transforming the lives of deaf and hard of hearing people through research are greater than ever before and, as the only research charity in this field in the UK, Deafness Research UK has an enormous responsibility to ensure that our high quality research teams receive the support they need. Paula’s extensive research experience will be invaluable in helping us drive research forward effectively and we are delighted that she is joining us."

Dr Clements says, "This is a tremendously exciting opportunity for me, giving me the chance to apply my scientific knowledge and expertise to impact on the research programmes funded by Deafness Research UK. Remarkable breakthroughs are being made in the field of hearing research and I am looking forward to being involved in supporting this vital work."

Dr Clements gained her PhD in Molecular Biology at the University of Manchester, and her BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry at the University of Nottingham.
