Deafness Research UK reaffirms benefits of cochlear implants

4 May 2005

Today there are more than 4,000 cochlear implant users in the UK and it is widely recognised that these devices have the potential to transform lives.

Improved technology means that more profoundly deaf people than ever before could benefit from implants which work by stimulating the auditory nerve, bypassing damaged sensory cells in the cochlea.

Unfortunately, in some parts of the UK, patients are being denied access to this life changing technology because of insufficient funding. While most children who are eligible for a cochlear implant receive one, adults in many areas are missing out.

Following discussions with our advisers, we have issued a statement affirming the benefits of implants which we hope will encourage health authorities to make more funding available.

"Although Deafness Research UK recognises that cochlear implants are not appropriate for everyone, and patients must undergo a rigorous assessment process, we are concerned about the current situation," says Deafness Research UK Chief Executive, Vivienne Michael. "There is clear evidence that the majority of people fitted with a cochlear implant have better communication skills, take more pleasure from family life and enjoy greater financial independence. With the aid of an implant, profoundly deaf children are able to succeed in mainstream schools."

Speaking recently on the subject, Deafness Research UK cochlear implant adviser, Dr Huw Cooper said, "Cochlear implants are improving all the time. It is important that we receive funding, not only to carry out more research, but also to ensure that all those people who could benefit from implants are able to do so. In reinforcing its position on the benefits of cochlear implants, Deafness Research UK is sending out a clear message about the importance of these life-enhancing devices".
