Antidepressant shows promise against tinnitus

Researchers in Sweden have found that an antidepressant may reduce or even cure tinnitus.

The surprising discovery was made by a team of researchers from Sahlgrenska Sjukhuset in Gothenburg. The team tested 80 people with tinnitus. Half of them were given the antidepressant Zoloft: the other half were given a placebo.

All the patients taking the antidepressant reported improvement in their tinnitus symptoms, such as high pitched ringing in their ears and trouble sleeping or concentrating. A few even reported that their condition was cured.

Kajsa-Mia Holgers, who headed the study, believes that the discovery is significant.

"I think this is an extremely important development, bringing hope to many people with severe tinnitus," she told the Swedish Expressen newspaper.

Details of the study will be published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology.
