Annual Review
This year marks the silver jubilee for Deafness Research UK, and with 300 scientists supported over the last 25 years, our work has made a real difference to deaf people's lives through the research work we have funded and the advice offered by our information service.
Our anniversary booklet 'Better treatment today: hope for tomorrow' reviews what we have achieved so far and looks forward to the future of hearing research.
Deafness Research UK was founded in 1985 because there was no other organisation in the country dedicated to representing the medical and healthcare needs of deaf and hearing impaired people. Hearing research has now transformed from a neglected field attracting little scientific interest to one of the most exciting areas of biomedical research in the world and we are proud of the key role that Deafness Research UK has played in delivering this change.
The potential to improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss and related conditions such as tinnitus has never been greater. Science and technology now offer tremendous opportunities to transform life for millions, whether through the latest digital technology, the development of drugs to prevent the deterioration of hearing or the discovery of medical ways to reverse deafness altogether.
In the UK we have some of the best researchers and most cost-effective hearing research in the world but pressure for funds is such that even the highest quality work often fails to receive support. There are far too few opportunities for talented young scientists to work in hearing research and, all too often, investment in training and talent is lost as scientists leave the field.
We are determined to continue building on the expertise and knowledge of the last 25 years, ensuring that we deliver high quality, high impact research that reflects the needs of hearing impaired people everywhere.
