Deaf relative inspires Lewisham man to run marathon

A deaf relative has inspired Sam Warriner of Lewisham in London, to run this year’s London marathon for Deafness Research UK.

Sam went along to support friends at last year’s marathon and it was there that he and some of the other supporters pledged they would run the marathon in 2009. When Sam started the application procedure, he spotted Deafness Research UK an opted for them as his nominated charity, as his uncle is deaf and the charity had the most relevance to him.

Sam said: “When I seriously decided that I was going to do the marathon, I saw that Deafness Research UK was one of the charities that I could support. Deafness related charities aren’t necessarily in the limelight as much as they should be, so running for Deafness Research UK appealed to me – especially as my uncle is deaf and it therefore has great relevance to the family; everyone has been really supportive and will be behind me all the way on the day.”

Sam is lucky enough to work close to Hyde Park where he runs during the working week and has regularly been running 13 miles at the weekend. Sam adds: “It has been great to take advantage of my work location as it has allowed me to run around four miles a day throughout the week. I am feeling good about the run on the day, and Deafness Research UK has been supporting my efforts by sending me useful information on getting the most out of the training.”

Sam concludes : “Although quite a few of us made a promise to run the marathon this year it is quite funny that I am the only one who is actually doing it! I’m sure my friends will be out on the streets in support, whatever the weather!.”
