Adrian Davis honoured
18 June 2007
Congratulations to Professor Adrian Davis, who has been awarded an OBE for services to healthcare in the latest Queen's Birthday honours.
Professor Davis has worked closely with Deafness Research UK over many years, in particular during the development of the otoacoustic emissions test for hearing loss and its introduction into the NHS as means of screening all newborn babies for hearing loss.
Adrian is currently involved in the Positive Support project which will help us to have a better understanding of what kind of early support enables deaf children to do well.

Speaking about the announcement, he said: "I see this honour, not as a recognition of my own personal achievements in healthcare and audiology, but as a reflection of the hard work and commitment of many others. The praise must really go to those who work for, and with, the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, healthcare and support service professionals, and campaigning organisations and charities that continue to give families such essential support.
"There are also many others who have contributed their time and know-how to implement and modernise hearing aid services for adults and children. They have fundamentally changed the way hearing services operate in England. My heartfelt thanks go to them all. I am sure that over the next few years the benefits of their efforts will be seen and they will continue to inspire commitment to delivering world-class hearing services for hearing impaired people in the UK."
Professor Davis is currently Director of the NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme, the MRC Hearing and Communications Group and is Professor of Hearing and Communication at the University of Manchester. He is Fellow of the RSA and elected Fellow of both the Royal Statistics Society and Faculty of Public Health. He is Chair of the British Society of Audiology, and an elected member of the International Society of Audiology.
