'Meet the Scientists' - what they said

Supporters of Deafness Research UK and Action for Tinnitus Research attended the charities’ first joint event in London on 27th March called ‘Meet the Scientists’. This provided a rare opportunity to meet the scientists who are working to find a cure for tinnitus, and find out about the cutting edge tinnitus research in progress.

Professor Carole Hackney provided an introduction into tinnitus and the parts of the hearing system which may contribute to the condition.  Dr Lindsay St Claire gave the audience a unique chance to hear about her study into the effects of caffeine on tinnitus, before her research has started and Professor David McAlpine spoke about his research into the brain and how he believes this is where tinnitus originates. We also heard from Dr Danuta Orlowska from the Royal National Throat Nose and Ear Hospital, who specialises in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as a treatment for tinnitus.

Along with the talks, the Deafness Research UK Information Service was present with its wide range of information materials to offer help and advice.

One person who attended said, “it was a real encouragement to see scientists, patients and professionals mixing together. Also, thank you for all the available literature and for no fee for attendance – brilliant”.
